Charley Pride's Biography

Charley Pride was born on March 18, 1934, in Sledge, Mississippi, as the fourth of eleven children of poor sharecroppers. He grew up listening to country music on the radio and learned to play guitar at age 14. He also had a passion for baseball and played in the Negro American League in the 1950s. He served in the U.S. Army for two years and then moved to Montana, where he continued to play baseball and sing in local clubs.

Early life and baseball career

Pride's dream was to become a professional baseball player, but he faced many challenges due to racial discrimination and injuries. He played for several teams, including the Memphis Red Sox, the Birmingham Black Barons, the Boise Yankees, and the Missoula Timberjacks. He was also selected twice for the Negro league All-Star Game in 1956 and 1957. He won the All Army Championship in 1957 while serving in Fort Carson, Colorado.

Musical breakthrough and success

Pride's musical talent was noticed by some country stars, such as Red Sovine and Red Foley, who encouraged him to pursue a recording contract in Nashville. He faced some resistance from the music industry, which was not ready for a Black country singer. However, he finally got a deal with RCA Victor in 1965, thanks to producer Jack Clement.

Pride's first single, "The Snakes Crawl at Night", was released without his picture on the cover, to avoid revealing his race. His second single, "Before I Met You", became his first chart hit in 1966. His breakthrough came in 1967 with "Just Between You and Me", which reached number nine on the country chart and earned him his first Grammy nomination.

Pride went on to record dozens of hit songs in the next two decades, such as "Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'", "Is Anybody Goin' to San Antone", "I'm So Afraid of Losing You Again", "All I Have to Offer You (Is Me)", "I Can't Believe That You've Stopped Loving Me", "Amazing Love", "Mountain of Love", "Someone Loves You Honey", and "You're So Good When You're Bad". He became one of the best-selling artists for RCA Records since Elvis Presley.

Awards and legacy

Pride won many awards and accolades for his music, including three Grammys, four Academy of Country Music Awards, seven American Music Awards, twelve Country Music Association Awards (including Entertainer of the Year in 1971), a Pioneer Award from the Academy of Country Music in 1994, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy in 2017, and a Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award from the Country Music Association in 2020.

Pride was also a trailblazer for African American artists in country music. He was one of only three Black members of the Grand Ole Opry (along with DeFord Bailey and Darius Rucker) and the first Black inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000. He influenced many other Black country singers, such as Darius Rucker, Mickey Guyton, Jimmie Allen, Kane Brown, and Charley Crockett. He also collaborated with other artists across genres, such as Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Conway Twitty, Glen Campbell, Dionne Warwick, and Jim Reeves.

Pride died on December 12, 2020, at the age of 86, due to complications from COVID-19. He was mourned by many fans and fellow musicians who celebrated his legacy and contribution to country music. He left behind his wife of 64 years, Rozene, and three children, Kraig, Dion, and Angela.

Origins and influences

The roots of gospel music can be traced back to the early days of Christianity, when hymns and psalms were sung in worship. These songs were influenced by Jewish, Greek, Roman, and African musical traditions. They were also adapted to different languages and regions as Christianity spread across the world.

One of the most important influences on gospel music was the African American spirituals that emerged from the slavery era in the United States. These songs were a way for the enslaved people to express their faith, hope, and resistance in the face of oppression. They combined elements of African rhythms, melodies, and call-and-response patterns with biblical themes and references. Some of the most famous spirituals are "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot", "Go Down Moses", "Wade in the Water", and "Amazing Grace".

White and Black gospel traditions

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, gospel music developed into two distinct branches: white gospel and Black gospel. White gospel was influenced by folk music, country music, bluegrass music, and shape note singing. It featured harmonized vocals, simple instrumentation, and upbeat tempos. Some of the pioneers of white gospel were Charles Davis Tillman, James D. Vaughan, Albert E. Brumley, and Bill Monroe.

Black gospel was influenced by blues music, jazz music, soul music, and R&B music. It featured powerful vocals, complex instrumentation, and rhythmic variations. Some of the pioneers of Black gospel were Thomas A. Dorsey, Mahalia Jackson, Clara Ward, James Cleveland, Andraé Crouch, and The Staple Singers.

Modern developments and genres

In the second half of the 20th century, gospel music continued to evolve and diversify, incorporating influences from rock music, pop music, hip hop music, and contemporary Christian music. It also reached a wider audience through radio, television, and the internet. Some of the genres and subgenres of modern gospel music are southern gospel, urban contemporary gospel, praise and worship, Christian rock, Christian rap, Christian metal, and Christian country.

Some of the most influential and popular artists of modern gospel music are Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Al Green, Kirk Franklin, Yolanda Adams, Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, TobyMac, Lecrae, Carrie Underwood, and Lauren Daigle.
